Module 6

Title: Unknown
Origin: Kenya
Performers: Children and a few adults
Instrumentation: Voice, hand percussion(hitting the floor)

This is a video of children in Kenya using music in their game.  They make a circle and there is one leader singing the song.  Everyone drops down to the ground and hits the floor with their hands.  Two people enter the circle and dance.  The dance is short.  Both individuals put their hands on their hips and dance until it's the end and they kick a leg out.  After everyone has had a turn, they all stand up and dance together.  This is a great example of socialization through play.  Communication and team building skills are seen through this game.  The children (and adults) seem to be having fun while playing this game.

  1. Danielle, first off great thoughts! It was so interesting to see students playing this type of game. Despite the language barrier, it was rather easy for me to see what was going on, based off of the non-verbal communication being displayed by many of the children. I love seeing the amount of improvisation in both the music, and the dances of the children. The game was reinforcing many great parts of music, while building confidence in the children - a win-win to me! Thanks again for the post and video!

Module 1

Title of the piece: " Kalinka" Performers : Yevgeny Belyaev & the Alexandrov Red Army Choir Culture of Origin: Russia Instrumentation : Male voice, chorus, russian traditional and western orchestral instruments (including the balalaika, the dorma, the bayan, the double bass, woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments) "Kalinka" is a traditional Russian folk song.  I chose this song because it is one of the most famous Russian folk songs throughout Russia and the rest of the world.  It has been performed many times.  This song in particular, could teach students how to feel the beat because each time the "Kalinka" refrain is performed, the tempo speeds up.  There is also a traditional "Kalinka" dance that goes with the song that we can teach the students.

Title: Yi Dance Performer: Liu Fang Country of Origin: China Instrumentation: Pipa I used to work in a school that was primarily students from China.  I would play them music from China and came across this lovely piece.  It features the pipa which is a traditional Chinese instrument.  The pipa is a four stringed instrument that is plucked.  It is sometimes called the Chinese lute.  Classification systems are extremely useful.  According to Wade (2013), "Chinese classified their instruments according to natural material that produced each instrument's sound (p. 35)."  This particular instrument is made out of wood and it has been played for almost two thousand years.
